Precision in Surgical Pathology

Our surgical pathology team carefully evaluates tissue specimens from biopsies, excisions, and other surgical procedures to identify disease and guide patient care. Every sample is managed with strict adherence to handling protocols for optimal accuracy.

Submitting Small Biopsies

Biopsies from separate sites should be placed in individual containers with 10% buffered formalin—approximately ten times the specimen’s volume. Ensure each container is tightly sealed and clearly labeled.

Managing Large Surgical Specimens

Large specimens must be fully immersed in 10% buffered formalin, ideally ten times their mass. The primary area of interest should be directly exposed to the fixative. Open and rinse bowel segments or uterine cavities as needed before preservation.

Ensuring Accurate Labeling

Specimens collected from different anatomical sites should always be submitted in separate, clearly marked containers to maintain diagnostic integrity.

Special Handling for Unique Specimens

Extremities, lymph nodes, kidneys, and other specialized biopsies may require tailored preparation or on-site evaluation. Contact a pathologist for handling instructions or to coordinate a scheduled visit.

Consultation for Complex Cases

When additional expertise is needed, challenging cases may be referred for outside consultation or specialized studies such as immunohistochemistry.

Certain items, including teeth, lenses, and surgical hardware, are documented with a gross description only.
