Special Handling
Specimen must be completely spun with in one hour of collection. If no gel seperator serum or plasma must be removed from cells and stored in a specimen transport tube. Obtain a fasting specimen by venipuncture in an SST tube before administering the glucose drink. The patient must consume the entire 75-gram glucose solution within 5 minutes. Begin timing when the drink is finished. Collect additional SST specimens by venipuncture at 1, 2, and 3 hours after completion of the drink.

Patient Preperation: Fast for 12 hours before testing. Do not eat or drink anything except water. Do not smoke or exercise during the fasting period or during the test. Testing should be postponed if the patient has been ill within the previous 2 weeks. The patient must remain in the laboratory for the duration of the test. Water is permitted during testing. Glucose Dose: 75 grams
