Thin Blood Smears: 1. Prepare 3 thin blood smears 2. Air dry slides for 10-15 minutes (DO NOT HEAT SMEARS) 3. Fix only thin smears in methanol for 15 minutes Thick Blood Smears: 1. Prepare 2 thick smears by spreading a drop of blood in a circle to the size of a dime. 2. Air dry slides for a minimum of 30 minutes. May take >1-2 hours to completely dry (DO NOT HEAT SMEARS) 3. Once the smears have dried, briefly dip only the thick smears into water to lyse the red blood cells. 4. DO NOT fix thick smears in methanol Specimen must be labeled as a thin smear or thick smear with patient name, MRN, date & time collected and name of person who collected specimen.
