If requesting a gram stain and wet prep: collect two swabs, one in saline for the wet prep and one culturette swab for the gram stain. Specimen must be received by lab the same day as collected. Specimens may be refrigerated if delivery cannot be make within 1 hour. However, the motility and viability of the organisms will decrease with age. Acceptable specimens should be examined immediately. If the specimen is over two hours old, a disclaimer will be attached to the trichomonas result, but testing should not be cancelled.
