Collection Procedure:
Collection area and materials must be lead free and protected from contamination.
1. Collector must thoroughly wash hands and wear powder-free gloves.
2. Ensure patient's hands are washed and warm. Fingers and hands should first be washed with soapy water, rinsed with clean water, and dried with a clean low lint towel (preferably plain white with no printed design if using paper towels).
3. Identify finger to be punctured. The finger to be punctured must be free of any visible infection or wound; it should be massaged to increase circulation before being punctured with the lancet. This can be accomplished before or during washing.
4. Cleanse puncture site with an alcohol wipe and allow to air dry. The puncture site can be prepped using only soap and water as stated above if the use of alcohol is contraindicated.
5. Perform capillary puncture. Use a puncture device that delivers a lacerating puncture, which cuts across the capillary bed. Avoid devices designed for glucose or hemoglobin monitoring where only one drop of blood is needed.
6. Wipe away first drop of blood. Apply gentle pressure to allow a second large drop of blood to form. Collect the second large drop of blood and subsequent drops of blood in collection container until the fill volume requirements are met. When met, cap or seal the container as appropriate.
7. Agitate the same to mix the anticoagulant thoroughly with the blood per the manufacturer’s instructions for the blood collection device.
Capillary Blood Lead Collection Cautions:
1. Failure to use lead free materials may result in falsely elevated results.
2. Failure to wash the patient’s hands may results in falsely elevated results.
3. Failure to allow puncture site to air dry may cause the specimen to be diluted.
4. Milking or squeezing the puncture may cause hemolysis and add mixture of tissue fluids with specimen.
