Special Handling

Centrifuge whole blood and separate RBCs from plasma within 2 hours of collection. Remove plasma from packed RBCs after centrifugation. Submit packed RBCs in original collection tube OR transfer 2 mL RBCs to a Metal Free Transport Tube.

Rejection Criteria

Specimens collected in tubes other than royal blue EDTA or Na-Heparin. Specimens transported in containers other than royal blue EDTA or Na-Heparin tube or metal free transport tube. Clotted or grossly hemolyzed specimens.

Stability

Preferred Ambient: 2 weeks; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: Unacceptable
